Obama Inaugural Preparations Giving a Boost to Green Businesses

A million invitations for the presidential inauguration next week have already been sent out. Printed on a Classic Crest Recycled 100 Natural White grade paper, the invitations are made of recycled fiber, with Alpharetta, Ga.-based maker Neenah Paper declaring it as the “greenest premium paper in the world.”
“It reaffirms President-elect Obama’s position on the environment,” says Jim Donnelly, of Precise Continental, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based printer, which did the engraving and the press run for the invitations. “He said he’s environmentally friendly and he’s putting his dollars where he said he would. He’s specifying a paper that meets his own criteria.”

At the Green Inaugural Ball, the ‘trashion’ trend is on the upswing, which my colleague Stephanie Simon also reported yesterday.

Many attendees are being encouraged to car-pool and use public transit. Some are using Segways. Segs in the City, which rents out Segways, says one-third of its fleet has been booked already.
