Parent says school's weight notices causes emotional distress

"My daughter is big-boned," Flaurette Martinez tells television station KUSA of Denver. Her daughter's school district doesn't share that opinion: It says the daughter's body mass index suggests the girl is overweight, and it sent home a note with Martinez's daughter to inform her mother.

Of course, the daughter read the note as well, and the mother now is upset. "The part that upset her the most as she started reading it, there it stated that she was overweight and she started to cry saying, 'Mom, that school tells me I'm fat.' So, it was very heart wrenching," Martinez told the station.

She says the school should have mailed her the information instead of sending it home with her daughter. "If she would have dropped this letter, a student may have found it and may have exposed it to other students," said Martinez.
