U.S. News Revs Up Rankings

As its popular, controversial college ranking enters its 25th year, U.S. News is significantly expanding its rankings business.

Five years ago, hospitals, grad schools and colleges comprised the magazine’s annual best-of issues. Health-insurance plans were added two years ago, and this year brings five more: children’s hospitals, cars, best places to retire and two new college rankings — best black colleges, and best of the highly ranked schools that are easier to get into. “We do have others in the works,” the magazine’s editor, Brian Kelly, told me, but he declined to elaborate.
